Social Group Field Surveys
Anefis, Aquelhok, Gao, Kidal, and Tessalit, Mali
The client sought to develop situational awareness on the prevailing ethnic, tribal and religious breakdown in multiple cities in Mali. To support this requirement, it required the support of a firm with experience conducting primary survey research in urban and rural areas of Mali was required.
A MSI team comprised of social scientists and local researchers conducted qualitative survey research on a range of topics including ethnic/tribal identity, alliances, loyalties, feuds as well as control over critical resources, including water wells, marriage ties between major clans/major leaders and religious affiliation. After data collection was completed, MSI performed quantitative analysis on the qualitative data.
The client gained insights regarding prevailing ethnic/tribal and religious issues that could potentially destabilize the locations surveyed. This information was used to develop targeted engagement programs to encourage improved relations amongst disparate groups.
